Nurturing Inclusive Employability

Fostering Inclusive Employability for Underserved Communities

In Africa, young women and individuals with disabilities face significant challenges accessing employment due to social, economic, and civic disparities. High unemployment rates among African youths, particularly young women, are exacerbated by limited access to education, skills training, and domestic responsibilities. Additionally, individuals with disabilities in Africa experience alarming rates of unemployment and limited educational opportunities. Did you know that, according to KOIS, Africa is home to 226 million youth, with women constituting 50.1% of the population? Talent2Africa reports that only 10% of children with disabilities in Africa have access to education, and a staggering 80% of adults with disabilities are unemployed. The 2019 KPHC Report reveals that in Kenya, mobility impairments are the most common disability, with a higher proportion of females (57%) than males (43%) facing disabilities.

At Next Step Foundation, we recognize the pressing need to address these issues and are fortunate to be part of an organization dedicated to bridging this gap and fostering inclusive employability for underserved communities. Through our impactful efforts, we aim to empower individuals with the necessary skills, training, and job opportunities.

Transformative Projects: Empowering Change

As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive employability, we have undertaken transformative projects that make a real difference. One notable project from last year, conducted in collaboration with the Innovation to Inclusion (i2i) program, empowered 17 individuals with disabilities by equipping them with essential tech skills. In addition to vocational skills, holistic development plays a crucial role in addressing the diverse needs and circumstances of participants, encompassing personal growth, self-confidence, emotional well-being, and social integration. Recognizing this, we also provided comprehensive soft skills and job readiness training with the support of Dell Technologies. The outcome was remarkable: all 17 participants secured employment, achieving an outstanding 100% job placement rate.

Join us in making a lasting impact and empowering change. Together, we can bridge the gap between underserved communities and employability, fostering a more inclusive and equitable workforce.
