Nourishing Minds, Fueling Futures through Innovation on World Food Day

Celebrating Food 4 Education’s Impact in Kenya

As we celebrate World Food Day, we’re reminded that the right to food is a fundamental cornerstone for a better life and a brighter future. ‘Food’ encompasses more than nourishment—it signifies diversity, nutrition, affordability, and safety. We envision a world where a greater variety of nutritious foods is accessible to all, in every community, benefiting all members of society.

World Food Day also emphasizes the need for global collaboration. The private sector, farmers, academia, civil society, and individuals all play vital roles in addressing hunger, promoting healthy food choices, reducing waste, and safeguarding our environment. Together, we must ensure everyone has access to enough diverse, nutritious, and safe food.

At the Next Step Foundation, we recognize that access to food is a vital aspect of human well-being and economic empowerment. As we work to create job opportunities and economic inclusion for marginalized communities – Persons with Disabilities, women, and youth, we understand that addressing basic needs, such as food security, is key to empowering individuals to thrive. Before we can fully implement our RAATT model (Recruit, Assess, Accommodate, Train, Transition) for upskilling and employment, our participants need to have their fundamental needs met, including safe, nutritious meals.

In the spirit of innovation, we’d like to highlight an organization making remarkable strides in tackling food insecurity in Kenya—Food 4 Education, a portfolio organization of Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation. This organization, founded by Wawira Njiru in 2012, is revolutionizing school feeding programs and improving the lives of thousands of children each day. Most recently, they were honoured with The Audacious Project’s award for extraordinary organizations addressing urgent global challenges.

What started as a small initiative serving 25 children has grown into a movement feeding over 100,000 students daily across Nairobi County. Food 4 Education is leveraging tech-enabled solutions, such as their Tap2Eat mobile platform, to ensure transparency, efficiency, and impact. Their digital platform allows parents to pay for meals via mobile money, and the system provides valuable data on meal uptake and student attendance, ensuring that resources are optimized for maximum impact.

The ripple effects of their work are profound—improved school attendance, better concentration, and enhanced academic performance among the students they serve. Additionally, Food 4 Education’s efforts create job opportunities within local communities, offering a holistic approach to addressing both food insecurity and unemployment.

This World Food Day, we not only celebrate the strides organizations like Food 4 Education are making but also reaffirm our commitment to leveraging technology for social good. Like Food 4 Education, the Next Step Foundation believes in the power of innovation to drive lasting change, whether it’s through creating accessible employment opportunities or improving access to essential resources like food.

Let’s take this moment to support and champion all initiatives that work toward solving the challenges of hunger, inequality, and poverty. By working together, we can ensure that every child and every community has the tools they need to succeed.
