“Empowerment is not giving someone power, it’s awakening the power within them.”

This profound statement encapsulates the very essence of Upili’s groundbreaking therapeutic intervention for Youth with Disabilities in East Africa.

At Next Step Foundation, we understand words have an intrinsic power that extends beyond dictionary definitions. Words shape thoughts, influence emotions, and ultimately drive actions. This is why we’ve chosen our words carefully when describing what we do: Counselors with Disabilities Empowering Students with Disabilities.

In East Africa, Youth with Disabilities face significant challenges, being 10 times more likely to suffer from untreated depression and anxiety due to widespread exclusion and bias. These mental health issues hinder academic and workplace success further perpetuating the cycle of exclusion. Upili takes an innovative approach to address this challenge through group therapy sessions led by Counselors with Disabilities.

Our identity as “Counselors with Disabilities” is not just a description; it’s a statement of shared experience and understanding. Our counselors have traversed similar paths, faced comparable challenges, and emerged stronger. This shared journey allows Upili counselors to connect with students on a deeper level, fostering trust and mutual respect.

The term “empowerment” itself is a testament to the careful consideration we put into our language. Upili does not “help” or “assist” – we empower. This choice is deliberate and meaningful. It acknowledges the fact strength and potential already exist within each student; our role is to nurture and unlock that inner power.

Upili’s approach goes beyond mere words.

Our pilot program at Joytown Secondary in the first trimester of 2024 yielded remarkable results: Participants reported a 78% reduction in depression and an 82% reduction in anxiety after attending Upili’s group counseling sessions. These statistics underscore the transformative impact of our carefully crafted therapeutic interventions.

By instilling self-confidence, improving academic performance, and equipping participants with tools to process trauma and navigate future biases, Upili empowers Youth with Disabilities to succeed in the workplace and achieve economic independence. Our graduates view themselves as capable, ready to showcase talents, self-advocate when needed, and become productive, engaged employees.

At Upili we’re committed to awakening the strength within each student, helping them realize their full potential and create a more inclusive society. This commitment brings us full circle to the idea of Empowerment is not giving someone power, it’s awakening the power within them.

By choosing words with intention, sharing experiences, and providing tailored support to students, school administration and the larger community, we’re not bestowing power – we’re igniting a spark that already exists.

Our carefully crafted language and approach serves as the key that unlocks the potential in each Student with Disabilities. Through Upili, we’re not only shifting narratives; we’re transforming lives, one empowered individual at a time.
