Q & A with Joseph:

🟠 What is your favorite part of the counselling work that you do?

My favorite part of the counseling work is seeing the impact it has on people’s lives, especially within the Deaf and disabled communities. Knowing that I can help someone feel heard, understood, and empowered to take control of their health and well-being is incredibly fulfilling. It’s also rewarding to break down communication barriers, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their abilities, has access to the care and support they deserve. That moment when someone feels safe to open up and trust the process makes everything worthwhile.

🟠 We are very excited you are joining Team Upili and working with students at Kambui School for the Deaf. What are you most curious or excited about with regards to your role with us?

What excites me most about working with the Upili Program is the opportunity to build an inclusive platform that addresses the unique needs of the Deaf and disabled communities. I’m curious about how we can innovate around accessibility, particularly in areas like healthcare, education, and mental health support. The program allows me to explore new ways of breaking down barriers and fostering real change, especially when it comes to empowering people with disabilities to advocate for their rights. Seeing these efforts contribute to systemic shifts in policy and society is what drives my passion for the work.

🟠 We’d love to get to know you a bit better. What do you like to do when you’re NOT working?

When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time in nature, especially by the beach. I love taking peaceful walks and reflecting on life. Traveling is another passion of mine, as it allows me to explore new places and meet new people. I also enjoy reading and learning new things, especially about topics related to human rights and advocacy. And of course, I treasure quiet moments where I can simply relax and recharge.
