Being an Effective Ally

Home » Blog » Being an Effective Ally

Now that we have defined what an A.L.L.Y. is it’s time to consider how we can become effective allies to Persons with Disabilities.

The key lies in amplifying the voices of Persons with Disabilities without interjecting our opinions, assumptions or insights. This approach aligns with a fundamental principle of disability rights: “Nothing About Us Without Us.”

Understanding “Nothing About Us Without Us”

This powerful slogan embodies the core of disability rights activism. It asserts no policy or decision should be made without the full and direct participation of Persons with Disabilities. This concept is vital because it:

•  Ensures authentic representation

•  Prevents well-intentioned yet misguided policies

• Empowers Persons with Disabilities to control the narratives

• Promotes genuine inclusion and equality

How to Amplify Without Interjecting

Share Stories and Content:

Share articles, social media posts, and other content created by Persons with Disabilities. Highlight experiences, challenges, and successes without adding interpretation. Follow and boost social media accounts of Creators with Disabilities. Engage with content and help increase their visibility – not your own.

Invite Persons with Disabilities to Speak:

When organizing events, discussions, and panels, invite Persons with Disabilities to share their unique perspectives. Ensure they have a central role in conversations.

Support Disability-Led Organizations:

Amplify the voices of disability-led organizations and advocates. Invest in their initiatives to increase visibility and maximize societal impact.

Use Inclusive Language

Adopt inclusive language in communications. If you are uncertain if language is ableist–ask (and listen!).

Ethical Storytelling

At Upili, we empower Youth with Disabilities to control their narratives. Our ethical storytelling approach ensures they lead in sharing their experiences and retain full ownership of their stories.

Highlight Accessibility

Advocate for accessibility everywhere from physical spaces to digital platforms. Make accessibility a priority and encourage others to become allies and do the same.

Tapping into Privilege

As an ally our role is to use our privilege to create platforms and opportunities for Persons with Disabilities.

For this Disability Pride Month (and beyond) consider:

  • Tapping into career networks and introducing Persons with Disabilities to key decision-makers and connectors
  • Advocating for inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in leadership positions at work
  • Educating other potential allies about disability rights and the importance of inclusion
  • Financially supporting disability-led initiatives and businesses

Allyship is a process of learning and action.

This Disability Pride Month, be a stronger ally by amplifying Disabled voices. Make room for Persons with Disabilities to lead discussions, share stories, and launch initiatives. By supporting and advocating for inclusion, allies uphold the crucial principle of “nothing about us without us.”
